Should You Wash Your Hair Before a Colour Appointment?

For most colour appointments, arrive with hair that is reasonably clean, dry and free from heavy product buildup. It does not need to be freshly washed that morning, but several days of dry shampoo, beach oil or salt can make assessment and application more difficult.

The old advice about dirty hair

Many people were taught that dirty hair protects the scalp during colour. Natural oils can provide some comfort, but heavily coated hair is not the goal. Modern colour planning works best when the stylist can see the true texture, tone and condition.

If your scalp is sensitive or has been irritated, tell the salon instead of trying to create a protective layer with product.

For balayage and highlights

Clean, dry hair helps with controlled sectioning and lets the stylist assess the starting colour accurately. Wash the day before if that suits your routine. Avoid heavy masks, oils or root-cover sprays immediately beforehand unless Piccolina advises otherwise.

After swimming or surfing

Do not arrive with the sea still in your hair. Rinse thoroughly, detangle and ideally wash out salt, sand and leave-in products. Pool swimmers should mention any recent discolouration or coated feeling.

Piccolina offers chlorine removal, so buildup can be addressed deliberately when normal washing is not enough.

What if you are booking vivid or corrective colour?

Follow the salon's instructions. Corrective work may require a cleaner starting point, an assessment or a strand test. Do not use a strong home clarifier the night before unless advised; it may leave the scalp or hair less comfortable for a long chemical service.

How to arrive prepared

- Hair dry and detangled - No heavy oil or styling wax - Minimal dry shampoo - Honest colour history - Photos taken in daylight - Inspiration images saved on your phone

Frequently asked questions

Can I colour freshly washed hair?

Usually, yes, although some people find their scalp more sensitive immediately after vigorous washing. Avoid scratching the scalp.

Should I straighten my hair before balayage?

Usually not. Arrive with your normal texture unless the salon asks for something different.

Can I wear styling product?

A small amount is generally manageable. Heavy gel, oil, wax or root spray is better avoided.

What if I forget and arrive with dirty hair?

Tell the stylist what is in it. The team can decide whether a wash or adjustment is needed.

Next step: When in doubt, send Piccolina a quick message before washing or applying products.
